How We Learn about Estuaries
Scientists conduct research and monitoring activities in estuaries to better understand them and to learn how best to protect them and keep them healthy.
Estuaries are important to our ecology and economy, so it is important to protect them and keep them healthy and productive for future generations. In order to know how to best protect and manage estuaries, we must first understand them. We increase our understanding of estuaries through careful monitoring and research.
One organization that studies estuaries is the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS), a network of 28 protected estuaries (called reserves) around the country. The NERRS is a part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which is an agency of the U.S. government. In the NERRS, many different types of scientists (estuarine ecologists, marine biologists, marine chemists, hydrologists, soil scientists, etc.) conduct research and monitoring to better understand estuaries. The NERRS also provides information, training and other educational resources related to estuaries, to help others understand, protect and manage estuaries.
