Celebrating Lake Superior Day!

left line Estuary Photos
The public is invited to join the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve (LSNERR) to celebrate Lake Superior Day on July 15th at Barkers Island in Superior, WI. Drop in for live music, kids’ activities, poetry, student performances, art, informational booths, and local vendors from 11am until 4pm, all focused on celebrating and appreciating our Great Lake. Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn more about freshwater estuaries and one of the Great(est) Lakes; as the LSNERR staff put it, “No offense to all those other Great Lakes, but we’re pretty sure ours is Superior”.

Those interested in learning how to slow the flow of water during rainstorms, protecting water quality in Lake Superior, can join a Rain Garden Design Workshop at 10AM at the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve. Reservations are required and space is limited- call 715-392-3141 to reserve your spot.

Vendors and informational booths will open at Festival Park on Barkers Island at 11am, along with a tent just for kids. Music performances by Bill and Kate Isles, Laughing Fox, and Breanne Marie will keep things lively while the Lake Superior Poets pay homage to the lake. Superior Council for the Arts will exhibit submissions from their recent art contest “Postcards from our Estuary” from 1 to 4pm. At 4:00, young and old can view the beautiful short film Paddle to the Sea followed by Walk Around the Lake at 4:30 in the cargo hold of the SS Meteor, the last existing whaleback ship. The SS Meteor Marine Museum will be offering half price tours all day.
